A comparison: Kindle, Kindle DX, and iPad

As this project has gotten underway, I've been in the fun position of being the one who often gets to open new boxes. At one point, I've found myself with the two latest readers from Amazon, the Kindle and Kindle DX, lying side by side by side with an iPad:

    iPad, Kindle DX, and Kindle
These all happen to be "opened" to the same page of a book on our list of fall readings. Some quick observations and impressions, now that I've tried all of these:

    • There's something about actually touching the screen on the iPad that is aesthetically pleasing. Being able to turn pages this way is great, but also the ability to touch the things you want highlighted and noted makes me feel like I'm that much more interactive with a text. I'd like students, and all readers, to have that kind of experience. I'd still prefer a real book and a real pencil for much of my reading, but any of these devices will allow you to stack piles and piles of paper in a diminutive case.
    • The iPad allows me to read anything that's on a Kindle via the Kindle app. It also allows other readers, including iBooks, but also multiple pdf readers that are still more powerful than the Kindle. The Kindle, both versions, allow pdfs to be uploaded AND annotated.
    • The screen on both Kindles is really really pleasing. No glow, just this sharp contrast virtual ink. Even when you turn the device off, it leaves a random display of an author or some picture -- often related to the history of astronomy for some reason. It's really delightful. And both Kindles are MUCH lighter than the iPad.
    • I liked both Kindles more than I thought I would; and I especially liked the regular (small) Kindle much more than I thought I would. It's cute. It almost fits in my pocket. It's really easy to read. For casual reading, maybe, just maybe, I could get used to such a thing. I don't know what it really does for textbook or journal reading, though. It doesn't have enough display and enough interaction. But the possibilities might be there. If I taught literature, I might be able to recommend the Kindle as a tool, though I don't know if it would limit a student's efficacy for notetaking.
    • It's ridiculously easy to buy books with any of these devices. Maybe too easy. With the Kindles, especially, they just connect to a wireless network or cell signal with no fuss -- right out of the box. Within seconds you can spend some money and have the instant gratification of yet another book to read. Be careful!
    • There's also a web browser (experimental) on the Kindles. Not bad, but without the touch screen and with the limits of the screen (it doesn't update fast, though faster than other eReaders I've seen) it's limited.

Like the author, we noted our own impatience with anything that takes too much time. We notice that students don't seem to want to read books or check sources (although one person has been surprised that students have enjoyed reading non-textbook books that he has assigned). Overall, the discussion was interesting; we were lucky to have such a diverse group of people from different departments and colleges in our group.shafenSusan Hafen2010-11-23 01:13:46+00:002010-11-23 01:13:46updated9lmouldingLouise Moulding2010-11-15 20:26:03+00:002010-11-15 20:26:03updated8Added tag - hothhandleyHelen Handley2010-11-08 19:55:16+00:002010-11-08 19:55:16addTag7hhandleyHelen Handley2010-10-27 19:14:27+00:002010-10-27 19:14:27updated6hhandleyHelen Handley2010-10-27 19:12:41+00:002010-10-27 19:12:41updated5patriciadejongPat DeJong2010-10-25 20:51:12+00:002010-10-25 20:51:12updated4ajohnstonAdam Johnston2010-10-20 23:44:10+00:002010-10-20 23:44:10updated3link to new page addedgniklasonGail Niklason2010-10-20 20:28:34+00:002010-10-20 20:28:34updated2First createdajohnstonAdam Johnston2010-09-04 13:58:57+00:002010-09-04 13:58:57created1wiki2011-11-22T20:15:36+00:00groups/TLF/wiki/d9287FalseBook groups/groups/TLF/wiki/d9287/Book_groups.htmlPat DeJong20 updatesBook groups <For editing instructions, see the bottom of the page.> Fall 2011: Cutting for Stone, COAST Group Spring 2011: ...Falsepatriciadejong2011-11-22T20:15:36+00:00hot/groups/TLF/search/index.rss?sort=modifiedDate&kind=all&sortDirection=reverse&excludePages=wiki/welcomelist/groups/TLF/search/?sort=modifiedDate&kind=all&sortDirection=reverse&excludePages=wiki/welcomeRecent ChangesRecentChangesListUpdates?sort=modifiedDate&kind=all&sortDirection=reverse&excludePages=wiki/welcome0/groups/TLF/sidebar/RecentChangesListmodifiedDateallRecent ChangesRecentChangesListUpdateswiki/welcomeNo recent changes.reverse5search
